4 Steps to Better Understand Your Ideal Art Collectors

When you're an artist selling online, you know the number one most important step in successfully selling your artwork is identifying your ideal collectors. Without that, you'll have a hard time consistently selling your work.

But it's one thing to simply identify who those collectors are. It's another thing entirely to connect and market to them. In order to create a brand that your ideal collectors resonate with, you need to determine and understand the things they relate to. One of the most effective ways to do this through how to write and talk about your work online!

You want to use keywords and phrases they're familiar with, including the words they would use themselves to describe their home, lifestyle, aesthetic, etc. When you’re just starting out, however, you might not know what these words are yet- and that's okay!

In this blog post, we’re sharing 4 steps to help you better understand and connect with your ideal collectors by improving the way you write and talk about your artwork!

Step 1: Think Like Your Ideal Collector

Think about your ideal collector for a moment. You know who they are, but have you thought about the other things that make them who they are, such as the places they like to shop?
Are they a more high end clientele who shops at places like Anthropology? Or are you targeting the everyday mom who’s on a budget but still wants their home to look beautiful? Identifying the places they shop can give you a great inside look into their habits and interests!

Step 2: Immerse Yourself in Their World

Once you've pinpointed these online hubs, immerse yourself in their world. Take the time to visit the various websites they like and get a feel for the aesthetic, tone, and overall vibe of the site. By doing so, you'll also gain valuable insights into the visual and textual language that resonates with your ideal art collectors.

Step 3: Read Between the Lines – Keywords and Phrases

Here’s where the text comes into play. Pay close attention to the phrases and keywords you see, as well as the tone of voice it’s written in. Jot down recurring words that stand out – those that evoke emotion, highlight uniqueness, and speak directly to the collector's sensibilities.

Step 4: Craft Your Message with Precision

Now that you have a collection of keywords to work with, it’s time to start writing. Integrate these words everywhere you can- in your social media posts, on your About page, in your product descriptions, etc. By using language your collectors are familiar with and use themselves, you're creating a connection that goes beyond the visual appeal of your artwork.

The path to successful online art sales starts with understanding your audience. By putting yourself in their shoes and and immersing yourself in the digital spaces they spend time in, you're positioning yourself for a more impactful online presence.
